Who This Support Is For
Equine-assisted therapy at Berkman Academy supports children and teens who may be challenged by:
• anxiety
• ADHD
• autism
• emotional regulation challenges
• low confidence
• social difficulties

Some young people struggle in traditional talk therapy.
Working with horses provides a practical way to learn emotional awareness and regulation through real interaction rather than conversation alone.
What Happens in a Session
Sessions take place outdoors in a calm paddock environment and may include:
• observing the horses
• grooming and caring for the horse
• leading exercises
• confidence-building activities
• reflection and discussion

These activities help participants develop awareness, communication skills and emotional regulation in a safe and supportive setting.
Why Horses Can Help
Horses are highly sensitive to body language and emotional signals.
They respond immediately to tension, hesitation and confidence.

This creates a powerful learning experience where participants can see how their internal state affects the interaction and practice staying calm, focused and present.

For many young people, this experiential approach makes emotional learning easier than traditional therapy settings.
